The first half is built around adventure and swashbuckling: Erich Korngold’s overture to the Errol Flynn movie The Sea Hawk, and music from Pirates of the Caribbean open the concert before GJSO’s own Nicholas Gledhill plays Elizabeth Raum’s Sherwood Legend, based on the stories of Robin Hood. After intermission, Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade–four movements of storytelling through orchestral color that remain among the most vividly imaginative music ever written for orchestra.
